Born and educated in London (University College London), B.A. Hons. in German and French. Dr. phil. Univ. Tübingen.

Tenured position Universität des Saarlandes until 1992, then tenured position Technische Universität Darmstadt. Books: Faust in der DDR (1987), Alfred Kerr: Die Biographie Rowohlt Verlag 2016. Edited two volumes of the Alfred Kerr-Ausgabe Sucher und Selige 2009 and Das war meine Zeit 2013 and also Alfred Kerr Was ist der Mensch in Berlin 2017 and a three volume edition of Hermann Sinsheimer's works. Other publications on the 18th century, on Goethe, translation of exile novels, Yiddish in English, Elsa Bernstein, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Hans Fallada, Gerhart Hauptmann, exile literature (Elisabeth Castonier, Lion Feuchtwanger, Anna Gmeyner, Oskar Maria Graf, Eva Ibbotson, Alfred Kerr, Judith Kerr, Heinrich Mann, Ruth Rewald, Adam Scharrer, Hermynia Zur Mühlen, Arnold Zweig, children's literature by exile authors) Shoah studies and concentration camp diaries.

Currently editing Alfred Kerr's Berliner Plauderbriefe for the Königsberger Allgemeine Zeitung 1897-1922.
