Biography

Born and educated in London (University College London), B.A. Hons. in German and French. Freelance writer for the BBC German Service and teaching at the Polytechnic of Central London, also research assistant on Fontane–Briefausgabe. Dr. phil. Univ. Tübingen.

Tenured position Universität des Saarlandes until 1992, currently tenured position Technische Universität Darmstadt. Book: Faust in der DDR, other publications on the 18th century, on Goethe, translation of exile novels, Yiddish in English, Elsa Bernstein, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Hans Fallada, Gerhart Hauptmann, exile literature (Elisabeth Castonier, Lion Feuchtwanger, Anna Gmeyner, Oskar Maria Graf, Eva Ibbotson, Alfred Kerr, Heinrich Mann, Ruth Rewald, Adam Scharrer, Hermynia Zur Mühlen, Arnold Zweig, children's literature by exile authors) Shoah studies and concentration camp diaries. Currently editing Alfred Kerr's Berliner Plauderbriefe for the Königsberger Allgemeine Zeitung 1897-1922 and a three volume edition of Hermann Sinsheimer's works.
